Stories of Afghanistan and Iraq Come to University of Oregon

April 20, 2002
7:00 p.m.
Univ. of Oregon, Willamette Hall, Rm. 100, Eugene

For Immediate Release

Afghan human-rights activists and a seasoned journalist bring insight into the world of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan in a panel discussion at University of Oregon.

Neesha Mirchandani and James Ingalls, members of the board of directors of the Afghan Women's Mission, a volunteer organization raising funds for health and education of Afghan refugees mutually with RAWA, will give an in-depth view of the humanitarian work in Afghanistan and in refugee camps in Pakistan. Larry Everest, a journalist who has covered the Middle East and Central Asia for over 20 years, will speak about the effects of war on the people of Afghanistan and on the rest of the world.

The speakers will tell stories of Afghans who have suffered 23 years of war, and continue to suffer today under unbearable conditions. As Afghans themselves, RAWA's humanitarian work reaches Afghan people that other aid agencies cannot. RAWA has led demonstrations to demand democracy and human rights for Afghans, and has received many accolades for its documentation of human rights abuses. Established in 1977, RAWA is the oldest political and humanitarian feminist organization in Afghanistan.

Neesha Mirchandani, manager of operations at the Afghan Women's Mission, speaks publicly about RAWA's work in Pakistan and Afghanistan and the situation for the women of Afghanistan. Mirchandani also volunteers with Anandwan and DisabilityNet in India. Her poem about an Afghan woman under the Taliban can be found at: www.rawa.org/neesha.htm

Dr. James Ingalls is treasurer for the Afghan Women's Mission, and works as a staff scientist at Caltech's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center. He has written on a number of political issues.

Journalist Larry Everest writes for The Revolutionary Worker and other mid-East publications. He interviewed Islamic militants in 1980 holding the U.S. Embassy hostage. In 1988 he covered the Palestinian people's first intifadah. In 1991, shortly after the Persian Gulf War, Everest filmed the award-winning video, Iraq: War Against the People, documenting the impact of war on the Iraqi people. Everest's articles have appeared in the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and many other newspapers.

This lecture is sponsored by Justice not War and the University of Oregon Department of History.
