FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

9/26/01

AFTER SEPTEMBER 11: A TEACH-IN will be held in the Ballroom of the Erb Memorial Union on the University of Oregon campus on Tuesday, October 2 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Among the speakers will be Daniel Goldrich on U.S. foreign policy, Shaul Cohen on the Middle East, and Anita Weiss, an expert on South Asia. All are members of Concerned Faculty for Peace and Justice, the group sponsoring the forum. They will be joined by an expert on Islamic societies and a representative of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon.

At 8:30 p.m., following the plenary session, audience members will be invited to participate in discussion groups on the following topics: The Media Response to the Crisis; Peace and Security after September 11; International Institutions of Law and Justice; Conflict Resolution; and Community Responses and Peace Movements.

The Teach-In is the first of many events that are being planned on the University of Oregon campus dealing with the September 11 terrorist attack and its aftermath. "It is urgent and patriotic to ask questions now," said Barbara Corrado Pope, a member Concerned Faculty. "Americans are united in their grief and their call for justice. But we need to hear more than one perspective on how we can make the world a safer place. We need to understand the reasons behind the terrifying hatred directed against the United States and find ways to act that will not foment more hatred for generations to come."

Among later events to be held on campus is a three-day conference sponsored by Eugene Peace Works and other community organizations entitled "Peace, Justice, and Globalization: Community Responses to 9/11." This will take place October 19-21.

AFTER SEPTEMBER 11 is free and open to the public.
