The Packard Foundation The Packard Foundation was created in 1964 by David Packard (1912-1996), co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and his wife, Lucile Salter Packard (1914-1987). They believed America to be the home of a unique type of organization dependent upon private funding and volunteer leadership. Together, universities, national institutions, community groups, youth agencies, family planning centers, and hospitals constitute a great American tradition that complements government efforts to focus on society's needs. In many ways, private programs are more effective than those of government. The Foundation, now in its thirty-second year, will continue to support these organizations with the hope and expectation that we can strengthen them and, thereby, help people through the improvement of scientific knowledge, education, health, culture, employment, the environment, and quality of life.

The Ottinger Foundation The Ottinger Foundation The Ottinger Foundation is a private family foundation that supports organizations promoting democratic participation, economic justice, environmental preservation, and energy conservat ion. The Foundation encourages submission of innovative proposals that address causes rather than symptoms of problems. Most projects funded by the Ottinger Foundation include a strong component of grassroots citizen activism and have national significance.
